Conagher wins an allowance optional claiming race at Churchill Downs

Not all the speedy, stakes 3-year-olds in the eastern half of the country are in action in the Amsterdam Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course July 31.

A day later on Aug. 1, down in Virginia, a talented group of 10 sophomores—led by Conagher  and Old Homestead —runs in the $100,000 Housebuster Overnight Handicap at Colonial Downs. Joining Old Homestead in the seven-furlong race as black-type stakes winners are Scaramouche  and Unified Report , and group 2 winner Editorial Comment .

The favorite is Patricia's Hope and Mark Farrar's Conagher on a cutback to a one-turn trip after fading to second in the 1 1/16-mile Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows July 9. In front by four lengths with a furlong to go, he was run down and beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Ain't Life Grand .

Earlier, Conagher won a pair of sprints in Kentucky, sizzling seven furlongs in winning a June 3 allowance optional claimer at Churchill Downs in 1:20.62 after taking a six-furlong allowance April 13 at Keeneland in 1:09.95. He earned identical 108 Equibase Speed Figures in those two victories.

Joe Rocco Jr. rides the Mike Tomlinson-trained Jimmy Creed   colt, who is 3-3-1 in eight starts with earnings of $252,353. He is the Housebuster's 123-pound high weight.

Marablue Farm and Pegasus Stud's Old Homestead, winner of the Concern Stakes and Lafayette Stakes and 4-for-5 overall, is next in the weights at 121 pounds. Charlie Marquez rides for trainer Brett Brinkman.
