Ladywearsthering wins first time out at Woodbine

Ladywearsthering , who sparkled in her debut, steps into the stakes ranks in the CA$150,000 Ontario Colleen Stakes (G3T) Aug. 6 at Woodbine.

A Sam-Son Farm homebred trained by Gail Cox, Ladywearsthering has her connections hoping for a duplicate effort of her career bow performance July 2.

Under Justin Stein, the daughter of Uncle Mo   out of the Speightstown   mare Southern Ring  led at every call, converting a three-length lead at the stretch call into a five-length romp, crossing the wire in 1:34.14 over firm going.

"We thought she was very nice, but it was really, really impressive," said Cox. "She just looks like she's galloping, and she's sort of pulling away from everyone else. She goes fast easily. Justin was very impressed with her."

"When I rode Ladywearsthering, I thought she just toyed with the rest of the field in the early stages of the race," added Stein. "She felt very confident when I rode her. That's what impressed me most."

The dark bay gets her first shot at stakes company, taking on nine rivals in the Ontario Colleen. The race for 3-year-old fillies will be contested at the same one-mile distance and over the same E.P. Taylor Turf Course as her first start.

Cox is hopeful the talented rookie can rise to the challenge.

"She's been so nice to have in the barn. Hopefully, she can move forward from that first race and step up against tougher company. She came out of her first race great, and she's doing very well leading up to this race."

The veteran conditioner, who has 17 career stakes wins, is looking forward to developing her talented young star. She called a July 30 four-furlong workout from the filly over Woodbine's training track in :47 2/5 "really impressive.

"She's been very nice to train," she noted. "I just felt to ask her to run in the Woodbine Oaks on July 24 would have been too much, just three weeks after her first start. She hadn't run on the Tapeta, and she hadn't gone two turns, so I didn't think it was the fair thing to do to her."

Other starters include four Casse trainees—Join the Dance , Love to Run , Mrs. Barbara , and Souper Hoity Toity —and Graham Motion-trained takes winner Vergara , who is cross-entered in the Seaching Stakes Saturday at Laurel Park.

Ladywearsthering is the 5-2 morning-line favorite, just ahead of Souper Hoity Toity at 3-1. The latter won the Selene Stakes (G3) in her season debut when racing on Tapeta, but is also a winner on the Woodbine turf course.

The Ontario Colleen is scheduled as the eighth race on Saturday's 10-race card that begins at 1 p.m. ET.
