Collaring favored Shedaresthedevil late on the second turn, Blue Stripe pulled clear in the lane to win the $400,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1) Aug. 6 at Del Mar.
Blue Stripe, a 5-year-old bay mare by Equal Stripes out of the Not For Sale (ARG) mare Blues for Sale , raced 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:42.97. Hector Berrios rode the winner for trainer Marcelo Polanco.
Desert Dawn rallied to nip Shedaresthedevil, who settled for third. Soothsay was fourth. Pacesetting Private Mission retreated to finish last of five.
As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge program, the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes provided an automatic, paid berth to Blue Stripe into the Nov. 5 Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Keeneland.
