Blue Stripe Upsets Clement L. Hirsch

Description:

Collaring favored Shedaresthedevil  late on the second turn, Blue Stripe  pulled clear in the lane to win the $400,000 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1) Aug. 6 at Del Mar.

Blue Stripe, a 5-year-old bay mare by Equal Stripes  out of the Not For Sale (ARG) mare Blues for Sale , raced 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:42.97. Hector Berrios rode the winner for trainer Marcelo Polanco.

Desert Dawn  rallied to nip Shedaresthedevil, who settled for third. Soothsay  was fourth. Pacesetting Private Mission  retreated to finish last of five.

As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge program, the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes provided an automatic, paid berth to Blue Stripe into the Nov. 5 Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Keeneland.
