Four debut winners are in the field of six entered Aug. 13 in the six-furlong Sorrento Stakes (G2) at Del Mar, but Procrastination and Absolutely Zero are standouts among them.
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Procrastination, a daughter of leading third-crop sire Not This Time , comes into the race off an eight-length romp going five furlongs July 4 at Los Alamitos Race Course. The 8-5 morning-line favorite was bred in Kentucky by Ramspring Farm and purchased by Eclipse for $72,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale. She is the second winner produced by the Super Saver mare Sky Saver. Procrastination is trained by Michael McCarthy and will be ridden by Ricardo Gonzalez.
Close in the morning line at 9-5 is Absolutely Zero, a J. Paul Reddam homebred daughter of Nyquist , who won her debut May 21 at Santa Anita Park by 1 3/4 lengths and followed with a one-length win June 18 in the five-furlong Fasig-Tipton Futurity at Santa Anita. The filly is the first foal out of the Square Eddie stakes winner How About Zero . She is trained by Doug O'Neill and will be ridden by Mario Gutierrez, who has been aboard for her two previous scores.
The Sorrento is considered a major stepping stone to the meet's top offering for 2-year-old fillies—the $300,000 TVG Del Mar Debutante (G1) to be run Sept. 10.
