Going Global draws clear under Umberto Rispoli in the Yellow Ribbon Handicap at Del Mar

At virtually every stage of the $251,000 Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T) Aug. 13 at Del Mar, Going Global  gave the appearance she was well, going to win the 1 1/16-mile turf race.

Fourth for the opening six furlongs of the race, as Javanica  set splits of :23.88, :48.16, and 1:12.13, she always appeared to have her foes at her mercy, and indeed, once cut loose by Umberto Rispoli leaving the second turn, the race turned into a rout. She surged to the lead with a three-wide bid and drew clear under a hand ride to win by three lengths.

"When you ride one like her, you're feeling very well. I was excited to ride her today," Rispoli said.  "When we came out of the turn, she gave me another gear. Then it was all over. She did it; I didn't do a thing."

Avenue de France  rallied to grab second, followed by Javanica in third and Burgoo Alley  in fourth.

The winner raced 1 1/16 miles on firm turf in 1:41.18 while carrying high weight of 125 pounds, five to seven pounds more than each of her six rivals. The CYBT, Michael Dubb, Saul Gevertz, Michael Nentwig, and Ray Pagano-owned 4-year-old Mehmas  filly paid $3.40 to win as the heavy favorite.

"I thought Umberto had her perfectly placed from the get-go, and it was just a matter of when he was going to press the button," said winning trainer Phil D'Amato. "When he did, she responded. All credit to Umberto and the filly and we'll move on to the (John C.) Mabee (G2T)."

The Mabee is Sept. 10, late in the Del Mar summer season.

The stakes win was the third stakes win of the meet for Rispoli, who has 15 stakes victories overall at Del Mar. The Yellow Ribbon victory was the third stakes win of the meet and 38th overall stakes victory at Del Mar for D'Amato. Neither jockey nor trainer had previously won the Yellow Ribbon.

D'Amato also ran Burgoo Alley in Saturday's race.

Bred in Ireland by N. Hartery, Going Global is most accomplished of four foals to race out of the Invasor  mare Wrood . Her three winners have all earned black type, and two are stakes winners.

The dam also has a 2-year-old US Navy Flag filly named Canadiansmokeshow who has placed in two starts, a yearling Saxon Warrior  filly and a Mehmas  colt born this year.

Prior to being bought by her U.S. connections, Going Global was purchased for the equivalent of $16,987 by Pioneer Racing from The Castlebridge Consignment to the 2019 Goffs Sportsman's Yearling Sale.

Her record now stands at 9-1-1 from 15 starts with earnings of $967,292
