Spendthrift Farm's three-time leading North American sire Into Mischief   was represented by two $1 million youngsters Aug. 8 at The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., including one purchased by the Lexington operation and partners.

Buying Hip 102 out of the Lane's End's consignment during the first session of the sale, Spendthrift teamed with St. Elias Stables and Cypress Creek to land the colt bred in Kentucky by St. Elias.

This is the first foal out of the multiple grade 3 winner Teresa Z , who herself is out of A.P. Indy stakes winner With Flying Colors , tracing back to 1988 champion older mare and 1996 Broodmare of the Year Personal Ensign.

"We're partnering with Mike Moreno of Cypress Creek, and St. Elias who was selling the horse is going to stay in for a piece," Spendthrift's general manager Ned Toffey said. "We have partnered before and are really happy to partner with them again; it gives you a lot of confidence that the breeder wants to stay in. They're obviously a class act, and we're in a great partnership with Mike on Keepmeinmind."

"He was always one of the more forward individuals that we had in the yearling crop on the farm, so bringing him up here was a pretty simple decision for us, and that was evident in how he showed himself up here," commented Allaire Ryan, Lane's End sales director. "He's a classy horse, he's got a great mind, and he was very professional the whole time up here. Did he exceed expectations, yes, but we were proud to stand behind him from the get-go."

Into Mischief's other seven-figure yearling was Hip 74, purchased by Japanese trainer and international agent Hideyuki Mori.

Curlin Colt Shines for Barronstown

Spendthrift and additional partners wasted no time getting in on the action Monday, landing a $950,000 Curlin   colt consigned as Hip 9 by Eaton Sales.

With a ticket signed as Spendthrift, BSW/Crow Colts Group, Schwartz, and Gandharvi, the colt, bred by Barronstown Stud, out of grade 1-placed, stakes-winning Light the City will likely head to trainer Brad Cox for his racing career, according to Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey.

"It'll likely be a part of the BSW Colts group," Toffey said. "We signed the ticket and we'll sort some details out later. In all likelihood (he will go to Brad Cox), assuming all that comes to fruition."

Toffey had high praise for the colt, whose dam was second in the 2015 Las Virgenes Stakes (G1). Light the City has already produced a grade 1-placed contender in the Medaglia d'Oro   filly Illumination , third in the 2020 Del Mar Debutante (G1) for trainer Bob Baffert. Further down the page the family includes grade 3 winners Very Special Lite and Strategic Partner. This is also the family of Claiborne Farm stallion and grade 1 winner Mastery  .

"What's not to like?" Toffey said. "He's a beautiful Curlin. We thought he was one of the best individuals in the sale, just had a lot of quality about him. He had a great walk, just moved around beautifully. We're really happy to have him. This (price) is right about where we pegged him. We really don't put a firm number on it. We come in and go through our processes and see where that leaves us."

Toffey commended Fasig-Tipton for the 2022 catalog for The Saratoga Sale.

"Fasig's done a great job putting the catalog together," he said. "There's a bunch of really good individuals. It's always worth your while to be here."
