Multiple graded stakes winner Plainsman has been retired from the track, according to a tweet from owner Shortleaf Stable.
The post reads: "After 32 starts, multiple graded stakes wins and $1.4+ million in earnings, Plainsman has told us that he is tired of racing and ready to move on to the next stage of his career. An announcement will be made soon regarding his new home with details."
The 7-year-old son of Flatter was a $350,000 purchase for Shortleaf from the Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for JSM Equine draft at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Most recently trained by Brad Cox, Plainsman earned his first victory in graded stakes company in the 2018 Discovery Stakes (G3). He went on to win the 2021 Ack Ack Stakes (G3) and the Razorback Handicap (G3) this year.
His last few starts include a runner-up finish in the March 19 Essex Handicap (G3), third in the April 23 Oaklawn Handicap (G2), and fifth in the July 4 Hanshin Stakes Presented by JRA. Last out he was sixth in the Aug. 19 Governor's Cup Stakes.
Plainsman, whose career ends with a record of 9-7-6, was bred in Kentucky by Joseph Minor. He is out of the Street Sense mare S S Pinafore, who has four winners from six foals to start. The dam has a yearling Quality Road filly and dropped an Authentic filly this year. She was bred back to Essential Quality for the 2023 season.
