While champion Ce Ce is away, six female sprinters will play Aug. 28 in the $150,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) at Del Mar.
Although none possesses the qualifications of Ce Ce, who was shipped east by trainer Michael McCarthy to pursue Sunday's Ballerina Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, two Rancho Bernardo entrants, Edgeway and Private Mission , are graded winners. Another, Slammed , is a standout New Mexico-bred who blitzed six furlongs in 1:08.55 in winning an allowance optional claimer July 28 at Del Mar.
The 6 1/2-furlong Rancho Bernardo is a race that can propel starters toward the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) in the fall. This year's Breeders' Cup will be held Nov. 4-5 at Keeneland.
Hronis Racing's Edgeway, a 5-year-old Competitive Edge mare, won the Rancho Bernardo last summer before running second to Ce Ce in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Del Mar. The John Sadler-trained Edgeway seeks to bounce back from a sixth in the May 7 Derby City Distaff Presented by Kendall Jackson Winery (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Baoma Corp's Private Mission , who weakened abruptly to run last of five Aug. 6 in the 1 1/16-mile Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1), also is in regroup mode. A three-time graded winner, the Into Mischief 4-year-old filly finished second, beaten seven lengths by Edgeway, when last sprinting in the Las Flores Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park in March for trainer Bob Baffert.
