St. George Stable's Mounsieur Coco, a half brother to two stakes winners, broke his maiden at second asking Aug. 20 on the Gulfstream synthetic surface going five furlongs. Wheeling back just a week later for the $65,000 Proud Man Stakes, this time going 5 1/2 furlongs on the synthetic, the colt again proved victorious for trainer Fausto Gutierrez.
Ridden by Miguel Vasquez, Mounsieur Coco tracked in second off a :21.95 opening quarter before snatching the lead midway around the final turn. From there, Vasquez kept the Kentucky-bred colt focused to the wire, and he drew off to win by 4 1/2 lengths in 1:04.16.
St. George Stable picked up the colt for $65,000 as a yearling at last year's Keeneland September Sale from the Paramount Sales consignment.
Mounsieur Coco was bred by Rose Hill Farm and is produced from the winning Bandini mare Cooking Mama. The dam of four winners from five foals to race, Cooking Mama's youngest offspring is a yearling colt by Bernardini. She was covered by Tapiture this past breeding season.
Bolt d'Oro, a grade 1-winning son of Medaglia d'Oro , stood the 2022 breeding season for $20,000 at Spendthrift Farm.
