Unanimous Consent wins the Woodhaven Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack

Eleven 3-year-old turf horses were entered in the 19th running of the $300,000 New Kent County Virginia Derby (G3T), the pinnacle of a stakes-laden card at Colonial Downs Sept. 6.

Since it began in 1998, the race has been won by eventual champions English Channel  (2004), Kitten's Joy   (2005), and Gio Ponti   (2008).

Klaravich Stables' Great Britain-bred Unanimous Consent , a Chad Brown trainee, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite. The consistent runner started his career with three straight victories, including a triumph in the Woodhaven Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in April. In the Almanzor  colt's most recent out, he finished a solid fourth in the Pennine Ridge Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park June 4. Manny Franco rides.

Trainer Graham Motion, a three-time winner of the race, runs Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Royal Patronage , who drops in class after twice going unplaced in grade 1s in New York this summer, his only starts in the U.S. from 11 starts. He lost those two starts buy a combined margin of only 2 1/2 lengths.

The Wootton Bassett  colt made his previous nine starts in England, with victories coming last year in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (G2) and Tattersalls Acomb Stakes (G3). Defending Eclipse Award-winning jockey Joel Rosario rides Royal Patronage from the rail.

Limited Liability  is a Kitten's Joy colt from the same owner/trainer combination as 2011 Virginia Derby winner Air Support —owner Stuart S. Janney III and trainer Shug McGaughey. Limited Liability has proved to be competitive in graded stakes events. As a 2-year-old, he finished third in the With Anticipation (G3T) and Pilgrim Stakes (G2T). As a sophomore, he added a third-place finish in the Pennine Ridge Stakes (G2T). Jose Oritz is up.

Grand David , California Frolic , Wow Whata Summer , Vance Scholars Capensis , and Catnip  are other top contenders in a race in which every starter races with the diuretic Lasix. Most raced without it in recent stakes starts in other states.

Four additional stakes will precede the Virginia Derby: the Woodford Reserve Kitten's Joy Stakes, Da Hoss Stakes, Exacta Systems Rosie's Stakes, and the Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks.

Little Red Feather Racing's Oakhurst  is likely to start as the favorite in the Virginia Oaks for Brown. Fifth in the Saratoga Oaks Invitational Stakes (G3T) last out, she was stakes placed in the Wild Applause Stakes a race earlier at Belmont Park. Those races followed consecutive victories at Gulfstream Park and Keeneland. Franco is aboard.

The Virginia Derby will be televised by FanDuel TV (formerly TVG), which will provide on-site coverage, and will be broadcast by Horse Racing Radio Network which can be found on Sirius216/XM 2014 and on the internet at horseracingradio.net.
