R3 Racing's Sharp Aza Tack will attempt to carry his speed beyond five furlongs and put his undefeated record on the line when he starts as the likely favorite Sept. 8 in the $500,000 Global Tote Juvenile Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs.
A son of first-crop sire Sharp Azteca —a rising star amongst freshman stallions with two juvenile stakes winners to his credit into the 2022 season—Sharp Aza Tack is a proven entity on the turf. Making his June 10 debut on the lawn at Santa Anita Park, the colt vied for the early lead before pulling away to an authoritative score for trainer Doug O'Neill.
Shipped out East to chase black type, Sharp Aza Tack was ultra-impressive in a 7 1/4-length demolition of his rivals in the $102,000 Tyro Stakes. In command throughout, he zipped five furlongs in :55.71, a time only a little more than a second off the Monmouth Park track record.
The speedy colt obtains the services of jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. for Thursday's 6 1/2-furlong event.
Mike McCarty's Private Creed appears to be the biggest threat to Sharp Aza Tack. The Steve Asmussen trainee captured his Ellis Park debut on the turf before finishing a solid third, beaten two lengths, in the Skidmore Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.
Recent Saratoga maiden winner Half a Chance from the barn of Wesley Ward could also be formidable in his stakes debut.
