Five restricted stakes—including the $151,000 Bert Allen Stakes, won by Wolfie's Dynaghost , a half brother to grade 1 winner Sadler's Joy —brought the racing season to a close at Colonial Downs Sept. 7.
Dropping in class and racing as a gelding for the first time after a seventh in the Forbidden Apple Stakes (G3T) at Saratoga Race Course July 15, Wolfie's Dynaghost took charge early in the Bert Allen under Irad Ortiz Jr. and drew away for a three-length victory. Favored at 3-5 odds against five rivals, he prevailed over grade 2 winner Largent , who checked in three-quarters of a length ahead of Kendama in third.
Wolfie's Dynaghost, a 4-year-old son of Ghostzapper out of the Dynaformer mare Dynaire , raced 1 1/16 miles on a firm turf course in 1:42.62, which followed steady opening splits of :24.27, :48.03, and 1:12.25. He returned $3.20 to win.
In capturing his fifth race in 16 starts, he picked up $90,000, boosting his earnings to $369,305 for owner/breeder Woodslane Farm and trainer Tom Albertrani. Those connections also campaigned Sadler's Joy, the late-running turf marathoner who took the 2017 Sword Dancer Stakes (G1T) during a lengthy career in which he earned more than $2.6 million.
Other stakes winners Wednesday at Colonial included Harrell Ventures' Sendero in the Jamestown Stakes, Matthew Schera's Tass in the Nellie Mae Cox Stakes, R. Larry Johnson's Spun Glass in the Camptown Stakes, and Susie and Ed Orr’s Boldor in the Meadow Stable Stakes.
