Juddmonte announced Sept. 13 the retirement of homebred, multiple grade 1 winner Mandaloun   to stand at Juddmonte USA near Lexington.

A striking son of Into Mischief   who earned more than $2 million on the racetrack, Mandaloun boasts an exceptional pedigree, being out of the Empire Maker  group 2 winner Brooch . He hails from one of the great families of the English and American stud books; in the past 12 generations, only one female line did not produce a black-type runner.

Brooch, also a Juddmonte homebred, won multiple group races at 3 and 4, led by the Lanwades Stud Ridgewood Pearl Stakes (G2) at the Curragh. Retired with four wins from eight starts and earnings of $217,059, Brooch is out of the Dansili  stakes winner and multiple group stakes producer Daring Diva , who is a full sister to Irish highweight older mare and group 1 winner Emulous .

The precocious Mandaloun was undefeated in his two starts as a juvenile. At 3, Mandaloun proved to be a true two-turn horse with precocity and brilliance by getting two top-level victories at 1 1/4 miles and 1 1/8 miles. He factored prominently in the American classics picture as he was promoted to first place in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) after Medina Spirit was disqualified. Mandaloun finished the Derby only a half-length behind Medina Spirit and went on to prove himself again in elite company in the TVG.com Haskell Stakes (G1). In the Haskell he finished a nose behind Hot Rod Charlie  and earned the win after Hot Rod Charlie was disqualified for interference.

Trainer Brad Cox said: "This horse is the entire package. I don't know that I have seen a better-looking son of Into Mischief. We knew we had something special right out of the box. He had an exceptional turn of foot yet could carry his speed around two turns."

Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief is a three-time leading North American sire and the current leading general sire by number of stakes winners (21) and progeny earnings ($18,698,842).

Mandaloun also recorded victories in the Risen Star Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2), Louisiana Stakes (G3), and TVG.com Pegasus Stakes. From the Derby through the Louisiana Stakes, he produced four consecutive triple-digit Equibase Speed Ratings, peaking at 115 in the Louisiana Stakes that he won in near-track-record time of 1:42.52. He retires with a 6-1-1 record from 12 starts and earnings of $2,096,052.

Juddmonte has set his stud fee at $25,000, stands and nurses.

"Mandaloun is a true Juddmonte stallion," said Garrett O'Rourke, general manager of Juddmonte USA. "He is a gorgeous horse who should offer breeders exceptional value when the time comes to sell their yearlings. We plan to support him in the same manner we did with the likes of Empire Maker and Arrogate."
