Treadway Racing Stable's Kentucky homebred Sail By will pursue her second career stakes score as part of an overflow field of sophomore fillies in the $150,000 Pebbles Stakes (G3T) Sept. 18 going one mile over the inner turf at the Belmont at the Big A fall meet.
Trained by Leah Gyarmati, Sail By was an upset winner of last year's Miss Grillo Stakes (G2T) in October at Belmont Park, defeating eventual grade 1 winner McKulick . Sail By, a bay daughter of Astern , has field-leading earnings of $223,900 and a record of 2-1-3 in eight starts.
This season, Sail By registered black type when finishing a pace-setting third behind next-out winners Consumer Spending and Pizza Bianca in the Memories of Silver Stakes April 24 at Aqueduct before rounding out the trifecta in the Soaring Softly Stakes (G3T) one month later at Belmont Park. She enters the Pebbles off a troubled sixth in the 1 1/16-mile Lake Placid Stakes (G2T) Aug. 20 at Saratoga Race Course.
"She's doing great. She came out of that race in good order. She got a little flat at the end of that race, so maybe the mile will be better for her," Gyarmati said. "At the break, she broke a little awkwardly with her head up in the air. She ran up to be second early on and then got a little flat in there. Hopefully, we will have better luck this time."
Jose Lezcano will retain the mount from post 10.
Trainer Chad Brown, a four-time Pebbles winner, will send out a trio of fillies, including Peter Brant's Gina Romantica , who won the restricted Riskaverse Stakes last out Aug. 25 at Saratoga. The daughter of Into Mischief made her debut on grass in the Riskaverse, making up 10 lengths from eighth to register her third career win while springing a 14-1 upset. A debut winner in March over the main track at Tampa Bay Downs, Gina Romantica defeated winners over the Belmont main track two months later.
Flavien Prat retains the mount from post 12.
Klaravich Stables' Faith in Humanity , second in the Riskaverse, will make her third career start for Brown. Prior to her stakes placing, the French-bred daughter of Lope de Vega was a debut winner July 24 over the Monmouth Park turf course.
Manny Franco will ride from post 4.
Bahamian Club , also owned by Brant, will make her stakes debut following a one-mile allowance optional claiming score Aug. 12 at Saratoga. The Irish-bred Kingman defeated stakes-placed Diamond Hands by a nose in her last effort.
Irad Ortiz Jr. will seek his second Pebbles triumph when piloting Bahamian Club from post 8.
Trainer Christophe Clement has entered a pair of contestants in Moyglare Stud Farm's hombred Lia Marina and Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and R.A. Hill Stable's Breeze Easy . Both seek to rebound after being unplaced in their most recent starts in stakes.
Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, a two-time Pebbles winner, will be represented by My Racehorse Stable and Spendthrift Farm's grade 1-placed A Mo Reay and Doreen Tabor's Majestic Glory .
Completing the field are Golden Rocket , Howdyoumakeurmoney , Miss Carol Ann , and Saratoga Chrome . Wonka is an also-eligible.
The Pebbles is carded as Race 9 on Sunday's 10-race program that begins at 1 p.m. ET.
