Caravel (gray) fends off Change of Control in the Smart N Fancy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course

Graded stakes winners Caravel  and Change of Control , separated by a half-length when 1-2 in the Smart N Fancy Stakes on turf at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 20, meet over a longer distance and over a different surface Sept. 19 in the Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (G2).

With a purse of $400,000, stakes are high in the 6 1/2-furlong race on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Presque Isle Downs, a track over which Caravel already possesses experience. The 5-year-old daughter of Mizzen Mast  is 2-for-2 at the Pennsylvania oval, and 3-for-3 overall on synthetic, counting a victory in the Queen Stakes at Turfway Park this March for trainer Brad Cox.

Bred by Pennsylvania by owner/trainer Elizabeth Merryman, who initially campaigned her, Caravel won the Lady Erie Stakes and Malvern Rose Stakes at Presque Isle by open lengths in 2020, running 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.40 in scoring in the latter race.

That speed has since been on display for other owners and trainers Graham Motion and Cox. She currently races for owners Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel, and Madaket Stables after she was acquired for $500,000 from the ELiTE consignment at The November Sale at Fasig-Tipton last fall. Her purchase followed a 12th-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) at Del Mar.

This year, after winning the Queen, she ran sixth in the May 6 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes Presented by Sysco (G2T) at Churchill Downs, captured the June 10 Intercontinental Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park, and ran ninth in the Caress Stakes (G3T) at Saratoga before taking the Aug. 20 Smart N Fancy.

Three wide, pushing the pace in the Smarty N Fancy under Luis Saez, she took command in the lane and outlasted Change of Control, who was bottled up in traffic for much of turf sprint. The New York-based Saez comes into town for the Monday ride on the 5-2 morning-line favorite.

Perry Harrison's Change of Control, unlucky in the Smart N Fancy, can become a millionaire in the Masters with a first- or second-place finish. The turf specialist is 10-9-7 in 38 starts with earnings of $953,725. The 6-year-old daughter of Fed Biz  , trained by Michelle Lovell, has never raced on a synthetic track.

Regular rider Colby Hernandez is aboard the 2021 Intercontinental winner, who took the Andy Guest Stakes at Colonial Downs this summer in advance of the Smart N Fancy. Earlier this June, she also ran fourth under Manny Franco behind Casa Creed , Arrest Me Red , and True Valour  when facing males in the Jaipur Stakes (G1) at Belmont.

She is the 7-2 second favorite on the morning line.

Other contenders include graded-winning synthetic specialist Artie's Princess , the graded-placed Jeanie B , and speedy local Boo Boo Kitty , victorious in three of her last four starts, topped by the Satin and Lace Stakes Aug. 15.
