Graded stakes winner Cezanne , a $3.65 million purchase as a juvenile three years ago, was euthanized after developing a fungal infection that was discovered in June, Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher told Thoroughbred Daily News.
Originally based on the West Coast, where he took the 2021 Kona Gold Stakes (G3) and 2022 San Carlos Stakes presented by FanDuel (G2) at Santa Anita Park for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, Cezanne was brought east this spring to join Pletcher while Baffert served a suspension issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. Cezanne trained but did not start for Pletcher, who told TDN that Cezanne was euthanized at Hagyard Medical Center near Lexington, where the horse had undergone treatment.
Bred in Kentucky by Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings and St. Elias Stables, Cezanne was purchased by bloodstock agents Jamie McCalmont and Donato Lanni on behalf of M.V. Magnier in 2019 from the Crupi's New Castle Farm consignment to The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected 2-year-olds in training sale in Florida.
The son of Curlin raced for St. Elias Stable and the Coolmore-affiliated Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, earning $347,000 while compiling a 4-1-1 record in seven starts. His final start came this year in his 5-year-old season, a second-place finish in the Oaklawn Mile Stakes (G3) April 2.
