In only its fourth year, the Fasig-Tipton California fall yearling sale has become a major event on the West Coast calendar. Scheduled for Sept. 27 at Fairplex in Pomona, it comes shortly after the massive Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Kentucky. This year, Fasig-Tipton has added a section for horses of racing age, which includes several 2-year-olds. California does not have a sale dedicated to 2-year-olds.

Though the upcoming sale is not limited to California-breds, the vast majority of those cataloged were bred in the state. Cal-breds have proved popular at this sale, especially in light of the lucrative incentive program and a plethora of stakes in the Golden State Series.

Tom's Regret  is one of the sale's recent stakes-winning graduates. A $20,000 purchase at last year's sale, the 2-year-old daughter of Tom's Tribute Pure , by Quality Road   won this year's Kentucky Juvenile Stakes at Churchill Downs and finished second in the Fasig-Tipton Debutante Stakes at Santa Anita for total earnings of $161,105.

Rancho San Miguel has consigned a half brother to Tom's Regret, by Sir Prancealot  , to the sale as Hip 263. The colt is from the first California crop of Sir Prancealot, who sired stakes winners from his earlier crops when he stood in Europe and Australia. Sir Prancealot stands at Rancho San Miguel and continues to shuttle to Australia.

The stallion's yearlings are already popular on the West Coast. Sir Prancealot colts topped this year's California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale and Washington Thoroughbred Breeders & Owners Association sale.

The catalog also features a half brother to the 2021 sale topper, E Z Pharis , a Cal-bred daughter of American Pharoah  EZ Indy , by A.P. Indy . Sold last year for $350,000, E Z Pharis won her debut and ran third in the Fasig-Tipton Debutante.

Terry Lovingier's Lovacres Ranch consigned E Z Pharis to the 2021 sale and is offering her half brother, Hip 153, a son of Smokem . Smokem is a young California stallion, by Union Rags  , who stands at Lovacres. EZ Indy is a half sister to champion Banshee Breeze.

Bruno DeBerdt's Excel Bloodstock brings a large consignment that includes several for Paul and Zillah Reddam. The Reddams have been at or near the top of the California breeders list for many years, often through their now-pensioned stallion Square Eddie .

Square Eddie is the broodmare sire of Hip 21, a daughter of Pavel , who stands at the Reddams' Ocean Breeze Ranch near Bonsall, Calif. The yearling filly is out of stakes-winning Smoove It  and is from Pavel's first crop.

Mrazek , whose first foals are 2-year-olds, is another Ocean Breeze stallion with yearlings in the sale. Hip 54, from the Excel consignment, is out of the Tapit   mare Walkingonadream . She has already produced stakes winner Eddie's New Dream , a daughter of Square Eddie.

Reddam homebred graded stakes-placed Hockey Dad  is among the horses of racing age portion of the sale as Hip 335. Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency has consigned Hockey Dad, a 4-year-old Cal-bred son of Nyquist  Ann Summers Gold , by Yankee Valor. Hockey Dad ran third in the 2021 Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) and Del Mar Derby Presented by Caesars Sportsbook (G2T).

The yearlings in the Havens consignment include several by California sire Mr. Big  . Hip 256 is a full brother to Cal-bred champion and multiple stakes winner Big Fish , being out of the stakes-placed Into Mischief   mare Perched . Hip 228, named Big Slew , is a full brother to multiple stakes winner Big Sweep , out of the City Zip  mare Misszippityslewda . George Krikorian bred both yearlings.

Tom Bachman's Fairview and the Kentucky sire Goldencents   collaborated on the 2019 sale topper, who brought $150,000. Fairview has a Cal-bred yearling filly by Goldencents in this year's sale. Hip 169 is out of the stakes-winning Rockport Harbor  mare Harbor Mist

The sale, which will begin Tuesday at 11 a.m. PT, has 279 yearlings cataloged (before withdrawals). Horses of racing age pick up with Hip 301 and go through 355.
