Goncalves Logs 5 Wins at Sloppy Fair Grounds

Description:

Veteran jockey Leandro Goncalves posted the first five-win day by any jockey this season at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots during the 11-race program Dec. 28.

Competing over a sloppy main track, Goncalves rode seven races on the card.

The Brazilian native won the third race aboard Ten Broeck Farm's Soft Wind for trainer Grant Forster and a $26.80 win mutuel. He came right back in the fourth with L. F. Telle et al.'s Escort for conditioner Tom Amoss ($2.60), and returned to the winner's circle after the sixth with Ten Broeck's Warm Breeze, again for Forster with a $23.60 straight price. His fourth triumph of the day came in the eighth aboard Paul Adkins' Harborplace for trainer Tim Glyshaw ($29), and he completed his win quintet in the ninth with Wesley Melcher's Jias Pal ($15.60) for conditioner Bret Calhoun.

"Everything went perfectly," said Goncalves after his fifth win. "All the horses I rode liked the sloppy track, and I got great trips and didn't have any excuses. It was just one of those days where everything goes your way."
