Bo Hirsch's champion Ce Ce , who won the 2021 Chillingworth Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park before her victory last fall in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) at Del Mar, aims to repeat Chillingworth history Oct. 2.
The three-time grade 1 winner returns in the 6 1/2-furlong, $100,000 race, a start aimed to propel her toward the Breeders' Cup, taking place this fall at Keeneland. She faces five fillies and mares on Sunday, among them 3-year-old Under The Stars .
A 6-year-old mare by Elusive Quality , Ce Ce ran fifth in the Ballerina Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 28. She is is 5-2-1 in nine starts at Santa Anita.
As he did last summer, this year trainer Michael McCarthy sent Ce Ce to Gulfstream Park, where she repeated in the Princess Rooney Invitational Stakes (G2), a race that provided her automatic entry into the 2022 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith's Under the Stars, who captured the Summertime Oaks (G2) at Santa Anita two starts ago in June, broke awkwardly and finished fifth in the Sept. 4 Torrey Pines Stakes (G3) at Del Mar. Though her last four starts have come in routes, she won the Santa Ynez Stakes (G2) sprinting seven furlongs in January for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
Last-out restricted stakes winner Teddy's Barino leads the remaining four entrants.
