Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale Wraps With Active Trade

The second session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale concluded Oct. 4, with two yearlings taking top billing at $200,000. The first, a More Than Ready filly consigned as Hip 287 by Scott Mallory, agent for Determined Stud, sold to Legion Bloodstock, agent. Not long after, a Munnings   colt offered as Hip 294 by Becky Davis, agent, sold to Summer Street.

"The weather was pretty dismal, but the pavilion was packed, and we had a great crowd. Every day I saw people I hadn't seen before; they just kept coming, and they came to buy horses," said Paget Bennett, Fasig-Tipton's Midlantic sales director.

Cumulatively, the two-day sale saw 386 horses sold of the 465 on offer for gross receipts of $10,266,200, with an average price of $26,596 and a median of $15,000. Seventy-nine individuals failed to meet their reserve, an RNA rate of 17.0%.

For two days of selling in 2021, 381 yearlings were sold of the 456 through the ring for a gross of $11,269,400, establishing an average price of $29,578 and a median of $20,000. Seventy-five yearlings represented an RNA rate of 16.4%.

"Last year was so good," Bennett said. "I think this year was still very solid. Overall, we finished up well. There were people here to the end. When we hit the supplement, there were sparks that flew in there as well."

Bennet added: "We had new buyers, including a group from Mexico that purchased six horses. The people who love buying from this sale were all here, and they went home with many nice purchases."

During Tuesday's second session, Fasig-Tipton reported 241 of the 287 yearlings under the hammer sold for gross figures of $6,319,200, good for an average price of $26,221 and a median of $15,000. Forty-six horses failed to meet their reserve, representing an RNA rate of 16.0%.

During Day 2 of last year's sale, 232 yearlings changed hands of the 278 through the pavilion for gross receipts of $6,692,100, at an average price of $28,845 and a median of $20,000. Forty-six yearlings represented an RNA rate of 16.5%.

"The state-bred programs are always popular, and I hope that translates to when they go to the racetrack or come back to the sale next year as 2-year-olds," Bennet said. 

Legion Bloodstock purchased a total of four yearlings over the two days, including the sale topper from Day 1, a $320,000 Uncle Mo   filly (Hip 158) consigned by Scott Mallory on behalf of her breeder, Determined Stud. The group also purchased the co-sale topper on the second day, a filly (Hip 287) by the recently deceased More Than Ready, out of Fluffhead, also consigned by Mallory, agent for Determined Stud.

The Maryland-bred is from the family of Silk N'Sapphire, making her dam a half sister to grade 1 winner Shared Account , grade 3 winner Colonial Flag , and Mark of Success , a grade 3-placed runner.

One other yearling brought $200,000 Tuesday, the son of Munnings out of Frost Fire. The colt was bred in Pennsylvania by Jon A. Marshall and is a half sibling to the stakes-winning filly Streetwithnoname .

Further down the page is the family of La Gueriere , a grade 1 winner and producer of grade 1 winner Icon Project  and Le Comete, dam of sire Munnings and stakes winner Munnings Sister .

"Consignors like this marketplace, particularly Scott Mallory. He was excited to bring Maryland-bred horses by Kentucky sires here to this marketplace," Bennett said. "He's done it before and knows you'll get rewarded if you bring a good horse. I think more people are getting confident in this marketplace; you saw that this year at the 2-year-old sales."

Marshall W. Silverman closed out the two days selling 42 yearlings for gross figures of $1,206,200 and an average price of $28,719 to be the cumulative leading consignor by gross.

Aiken, S.C.-based pinhooker Cary Frommer picked up six purchases for gross figures of $702,000, at an average price of $117,000, to be the sale's leading buyer by gross.
