International Star, who was scratched the morning of the Kentucky Derby with the hope that he might start in the Preakness on May 16, was found to have a chip in his left front ankle that will sideline him at least until the fall.
Ken Ramsey, co-owner of New York-bred International Star, said in a text message that the horse exhibited some discomfort in his left front foot on Tuesday morning. X-rays revealed a chip in that ankle.
“It will be removed and he will be off for 60 to 90 days,” Ramsey texted. “A fall campaign is possible.”
International Star ranked among the more highly regarded members of his 3-year-old class. He owns three victories in as many starts this season, with all of those coming in Derby prep races run at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. He took the Louisiana Derby in his most recent start.
