Combo of Calabrese, Ziadie Tops at Calder

Calder Casino & Race Course concluded its Tropical Park meet Dec. 29 with the owner/trainer combination of Frank Calabrese and Kirk Ziadie at the top of the standings.

Calabrese and Ziadie each had 28 victories to top their respective standings. They led the top 10 owner and trainer categories in win percentage and in-the-money percentage as well; they won 52% of the time from 54 starts and were in the money 83% of the time.

The jockeys' race was much tighter during the 53-day Tropical Park meet and came down to the final weekend of racing. John Delgado finished first with 38 wins, followed by Edgard Zayas and Eduardo Nunez in a tie with 37 wins each.

Longtime Calder-based trainer and member of the Calder Hall of Fame Bill White surpassed trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. to become the second all-time leading trainer in Tropical Park meet races won after scoring 19 to put his Tropical total to 399. Jockey Orlando Bocachica reached his own milestone of 1,000 career wins Oct. 20.

The 2014 Calder meet begins Jan. 3 with racing every Friday through Sunday.
