Solid Gains in Economic Indicators for April

Though there was a slight decline in the number of races run in April, wagering and purses rose 5.86% and 4.92%, respectively, in the United States when compared with April 2014, according to the racing economic indicators from Equibase.

According to the data released May 5, $860,083,041 was wagered in April compared with $812,496,623 the same month a year ago. Thoroughbred purses totaled $84,327,338 for the month, up from $80,376,651 in April 2014.

The number of  U.S. race days increased by three to 363 during month, up from 360 in 2014. The number of U.S. races fell by less than 1% and number of starts were down 1.01%.

Despite the April gains, all leading economic indicators continue to track downward for the year, primarily due to fewer race days as tracks felt the brunt of inclement weather during the first three months of 2015.
