Old Friends Retirement Farm announced on social media the addition of Get Western to the Kentucky farm.
The stakes-winning Get Stormy gelding won the $241,500 Old Friends Stakes at Kentucky Downs in 2019, which earned him lifelong retirement at Old Friends, a tweet from the retirement farm said. The race was his fourth and final victory. A Coady Photography image of the race memorably captured him jumping a shadow near the finish.
He retired from racing earlier this year at age 7 after finishing ninth in an allowance optional claiming race at Turfway Park Feb. 17 for owner Diane Pitfield and trainer Reeve McGaughey.
"When a second career at (Secretariat Center) ended due to soundness issues, our promise to Get Western came full circle. He's home!" read a portion of the farm's tweet.
Bred in Kentucky by Barr Inman out of the Marquetry mare Marquetessa , Get Western concluded his career with $298,641 in earnings.
Old Friends provides retirement to Thoroughbreds whose racing and breeding careers have ended. Classic winners Birdstone, Sarava, Silver Charm, and Touch Gold are among those at the farm. With education and tourism, the farm aims to raise awareness for equine aftercare.
