Dettori Pilots Kinross to Champions Sprint Stakes Glory

Frankie Dettori woke Oct. 15 to reports he might retire. He put them to bed almost as quickly as he did the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes (G1).

Dettori made it look easy aboard the day's major gamble Kinross . Sent off the 3-1 favorite having been available at double those odds 24 hours before the off, he never gave his backers a moment's worry. Given this is Ascot, and he had Frankie Dettori on board, there were a great many of them cheering him home. This place sounds different when that man is in front.

This competitive-looking sprint was done as a contest with a furlong and a half to run. The other 17 runners were scrapping among themselves for the minor honors, with Kinross showing them the way home from Run To Freedom , sent off at 150-1, and last year's winner Creative Force . It was emphatic, and the crowd had plenty of time to revel in Dettori's eighth group 1 of the year.

Having drawn a blank at the royal meeting, and then breaking up and getting back together with John and Thady Gosden, Dettori reveled in the Ascot atmosphere.

"The one I wanted to follow was William (Buick, aboard Creative Force) but I saw the distress signals at the one and a half and I knew my fella stayed and wouldn't stop in front so I kicked nice and early and he ran to the line. I was able to hear the crowd cheering so it was a very good feel factor," he said.

Asked about his reported plans to make next season his last he added: "I said I might, it's a possibility, but I didn't say I was going to! Everyone's always asking me, and anything is a possibility."

Kinross was following up his Qatar Prix de la Foret Presente Par Education Above All (G1) win over seven furlongs at ParisLongchamp 13 days ago, and Dettori added: "He's in tremendous form. Ralph Beckett and the whole team have done a fantastic job, his confidence is sky high. He's now won his last four, two Group 1s in two weeks, he's a push-button ride and he loves the conditions.

"I was very confident he'd run a huge race. Six is his bare minimum, but with these conditions it made it tougher for the others."

If Kinross runs again this season it will be over two furlongs further, with Beckett nominating next month's FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) at Keeneland, for which Betfair Sportsbook cut him to 9-4 (from 4).

The trainer said: "I've always had a hankering for him to do it at this trip, even with a Breeders' Cup Mile on the horizon. We'll go there as well with any luck, he's better off running than galloping. If he's right, he'll go.

"Fast ground over six would have been a bit of a struggle, but soft ground is no bother to him. I was delighted to see him travelling so well when Naval Crown came off it.

"What a horse he is, we're blessed to have him. I trained his mother and she ran in the Oaks, so for him to be as effective at this trip gives us all a real kick."

For Beckett and owner Marc Chan it was a remarkable third top-flight victory in three weeks, initiated by Lezoo 's Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (G1) triumph.
