Jockey John McKee and trainer Larry Smith maintained their reigns at Belterra Park at the conclusion of the 2022 meet Oct. 11. McKee recorded his fourth consecutive title at the Cincinnati oval, with 97 victories, lasting by seven wins over the iconic "Iron Man," Perry Ouzts.
"Winning here is always special," said McKee. "It's where I started and where my father rode when it was River Downs. I learned a lot in those days from Perry (Ouzts) and eventually Pat Day."
McKee's talents were recognized as an apprentice when he broke most of Steve Cauthen's records at both River Downs and Churchill Downs and later went on to capture titles at Oaklawn, Turfway Park, and Kentucky Downs (tied).
Larry Smith dominated the trainer standings by 31 wins over his closest rival to capture his seventh straight title. Smith's stable has improved almost annually since he took over training thoroughbreds full-time. In 2012 his horses earned $75,148, and at the close of the 2022 Belterra Park meet, his runners already had collected purses of $1,191,334. The mild-mannered horseman won 57 races with a most impressive 30% win record.
