Second-crop stallion Blofeld sired his first stakes winners when Johnyz From Albany and Chickieness won events for juveniles on the Maryland Million Day program at Laurel Park.
Johnyz From Albany provided the stallion with his first black-type winner in the $102,000 Maryland Million Nursery Stakes, and a second stakes winner for the sire followed couple hours later when Chickieness triumphed in the $101,960 Maryland Million Lassie Stakes. Maryland Million Day stakes races are restricted to progeny of Maryland sires.
Blofeld is a 10-year-old son of Quality Road produced from the Storm Cat mare Storm Minstrel . He stood the 2022 season for $4,000 at Murmur Farm in Darlington, Md.
Blofeld was unbeaten as a 2-year-old, winning the Nashua Stakes (G2) and Futurity (G2) at Belmont Park after a debut victory at Saratoga Race Course. He ultimately retired with a 4-0-1 record in 14 starts and earnings of $745,420, with his top achievement as an older horse being a victory in the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2) at age 4.
The Dale Capuano-trained Johnyz From Albany ($10.20), owned by breeder Charles Reed, is out of the Oratory mare Monster Sleeping . He raced six furlongs Saturday in 1:11.35 under Jorge Ruiz.
Morris Kernan Jr. & Jagger Inc.'s Chickieness ($3.80), bred by Jagger Inc., is out of the Harlan's Holiday mare Chickaletta . The Jamie Ness trainee ran six furlongs in 1:12.57 beneath Jaime Rodriguez.
