Key of Life wins the Myrtlewood Stakes at Keeneland

Key of Life  may prove to have distance limitations, but she has no talent shortcomings.

Racing Oct. 28 in the $200,00, six-furlong Myrtlewood Stakes at Keeneland. the speedy 2-year-old filly took charge from the start and drew away from her rivals to win by 6 3/4 lengths. The victory improved her to 3-for-4, all in sprints, and provided her sire, Ashford Stud's Mo Town  , with his first stakes winner.

The Flurry Racing Stables and Hoffman Family Racing-owned runner completed the distance in 1:11.09 over a fast track under Florent Geroux, after setting pressured splits of :22.34 and :45.91.

"As soon as I shook my hands a little bit and asked her for more, she showed me another gear," Geroux said.

Lady Radler  ran second, followed by Baby Got Backspin  in third and Take Charge Briana  in fourth.

Winning trainer Brad Cox said that if he does stretch out Key of Life, who paid $3.34 for a $2 win wager, it would likely come gradually.

"She's very well built. And she's fast," he said.

Bred in Kentucky by Moreau Bloodstock International, Key of Life is produced from the winning Harlan's Holiday  mare Longride to Wisdom . Four of her foals are winners from five of racing age, and she foaled a Caracaro   filly this year.

Key of Life was a $350,000 purchase by Flurry Racing Stable from the Top Line Sales consignment at Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale after she worked an eighth before the sale in :9 4/5.
