Freedom Trail wins the Awad Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack

Freedom Trail  became the first black-type winner for freshman sire Collected   when he rallied to score in the Oct. 29 Awad Stakes at the Belmont at the Big A meet.

A $150,000 purchase from co-owner Gatsas Stables at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, Freedom Trail won for the second time in as many starts after winning his debut Sept. 25. Like in the Awad Stakes, the 2-year-old colt closed from far back to secure the victory in a 1 1/16-mile turf maiden special weight contest.

Owned in partnership by Gatsas Stables, R. A. Hill Stable, and Steven Schoenfeld and trained by John Terranova II, Freedom Trail raced in sixth position for a majority of the 1 1/16-mile journey in the Awad before powering six-wide around the turn and collaring the pacesetting Dandy Handyman  by three-quarters of a length at the wire.

He stopped the timer in 1:42.74 on a firm turf course under Irad Ortiz Jr.

Freedom Trail was bred in Kentucky by LNJ Foxwoods and is the second foal out of the War Front   mare Freedom, who is a half sister to multiple grade 1 winners Hoppertunity and Executiveprivilege.
