The San Diego Zoo: Trust me, I know what you’re thinking, “I’ve embarked on a weekend away, and this chick is sending me to a zoo in my downtime, really?” Yes, really. You won’t be disappointed in the San Diego Zoo, which boasts an impressive 3,700 animals of more than 650 species. Another claim to fame for the zoo, it pioneered the concept of open-air, cageless exhibits that re-create natural animal habitats – and is one of the only zoos in the world to house giant pandas (jackpot! I would make a point of coming for this reason alone). Pack your bags, be sure to score a container of the cotton candy (delicious), and get your walking shoes on – the San Diego Zoo is just the start of your San Diego style ride.

Torrey Pines Golf Course: I’ll go ahead and throw it out there that I’m not the world’s greatest golfer (shocker, I know). But even being the village idiot with regard to golf, I know that our next spot holds its own as one of the golfing heavy hitters as far as courses are concerned. Situated in the California hills, your race-going group will have the luxury of peering down at the coastline as you play your way through one of the nation’s most famous public courses. Take a lesson from the course’s golf pros and check out the golf shop inside the clubhouse if you’re inclined. The views are breathtaking and the beers cold, so head on out. Be sure to call and book in advance!

Blind Lady Ale House: It was only a matter of time until the clock struck 5 p.m. (or not, theoretically the saying goes that its always 5 o’clock somewhere, right?!) Regardless, grab your gang and head to the Blind Lady Ale House for a treat that screams small-town brewery meets local, fresh food – score! Treat yourself to this Normal Heights neighborhood gem, where you can taste their craft-made beer to see which brew is best. Be sure to order a bite as well, and you’ll be served locally sourced ingredients from Suzie's Farm in the Tijuana River Basin and Crows Pass in Temecula. With tons of local events, tastings, and concerts featured weekly, the Blind Lady Ale House is one place that shouldn’t be passed up during your trip.

La Jolla District Shopping: Not interested in golf, check out a complete array of boutiques ranging from haute couture and the comfortably familiar ... this is one district that appeals to all. Side note, this is singlehandedly one of the most impressive areas I’ve ever walked – impeccably decorated with nothing out of place, if you no more than grab a “cup a joe” at the local coffee joint, you won’t have wasted a minute of your trip. Spend an afternoon waltzing the streets of La Jolla, and who knows … you may find yourself heading back to the hotel with a new dress, heels, or piece of jewelry to sport to the races.

From pandas to golf to shopping, San Diego is at no shortage of supplementary shenanigans to add to your racing-centered getaway. Much like life in general, this is one spot that is enjoyed to its fullest when embarked upon with a group of your very favorites; so rally up the troops and fill up the tank because there is a serious amount of fun to be enjoyed by all on this trip.
