China Horse Club swept in Nov. 6 at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's marquee breeding stock sale in Lexington, Ky., to snag multiple graded stakes winner Princess Grace for a cool $1.7 million from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment.
Cataloged as Hip 221, the homebred for John and Susan Moore is a 5-year-old daughter of Karakontie who was trained by Michael Stidham. From the mare's three years on the track, she holds a record of 7-3-3 from 14 starts with earnings of more than $1.4 million.
She became a stakes winner at 2 when she took the Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2T) at Churchill Downs. In her 3-year-old year, she won the Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes (G3T), Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T), and Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (G3) back-to-back.
This year she was successful again in the Dr. James Penny and finished third last out at Keeneland in the Oct. 8 First Lady Stakes Presented by UK Healthcare (G1T).
Signing the ticket was Michael Smith, who represented the international buyers. He said she will head back overseas, and back to the track, though a trainer has not been picked out yet.
"(She was an) A-plus physical, Very consistent form. We're going to take her to Australia and try and make her a group 1 winner, and then to the breeding shed," Smith said. "She's got another 12 months of racing in her and then she'll be a beautiful addition to the broodmare band."
As for the price, Smith said it was higher than he wanted to go.
"We really stretched to get her, but considering it was Sheikh Fahad and Coolmore that were underbidding her, it shows that we're on the right track."
Princess Grace is out of the Silent Name mare Masquerade, who has two winners from two foals to race. She also has a yearling Frosted filly and dropped an American Pharoah filly this year. She was bred back to Gun Runner for 2023.
