Pretty Birdie returns to the track following a more than five-month layoff and looks to regain her form in the $150,000 Poinsettia Stakes for fillies and mares 3 and up at Oaklawn Park Dec. 17.
The gray filly out of Bird Sense last ran in the July 9 Victory Ride Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park. In that race, after having a shoe repaired in the paddock and stumbling at the start, the frontrunning filly was forced to make up ground early in the opening strides to press for the lead. Those early efforts took their toll, and she faded to finish fifth.
The daughter of Bird Song 's game is speed, as she exhibited in her gate-to-wire victory over the Oaklawn oval in March when capturing the Purple Martin Stakes.
Despite morning-line odds of 3-1, the Marylou Whitney Stables homebred trained by Norm Casse won't be the favorite. That distinction belongs to Carribean Caper , who opens at 5-2.
The Albert Stall Jr.-trained daughter of Speightstown and Checkupfromzneckup , by Dixie Union, is also no stranger to speed. She won her first five races, the last of which came in last year's Dogwood Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs. Owned by Columbine Stable, she's only run twice in 2022, most recently a fourth-place showing in the Thanksgiving Classic Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
