Calgary Cat Seeking Third Straight in Vigil

Description:

Woodbine homebody Calgary Cat will look to win his third stakes in a row at the Canadian track in the $150,000 Vigil Stakes (Can-III) May 17.

The 5-year-old son of Cowtown Cat   won his 2015 debut in the Jaques Cartier Stakes, closing from eighth to win on the Woodbine synthetic surface, after using similar closing runs to win last year's Kennedy Road Stakes (Can-II) and Bold Venture Stakes (Can-III).

The gelding has a 8-3-1 record from 18 starts with $483,599 in earnings, all at the Toronto-area oval.

Owned by Stephen Chesney and Cory Hoffman, Calgary Cat will break from post 2 with jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva for trainer Kevin Attard.

The most accomplished challenger for Calgary Cat in the seven-furlong test appears to be Live Oak Plantation's Za Approval, a winner of three grade III races. Although the 7-year-old son of Ghostzapper   has finished in the top five in 17 straight stakes tries, he hasn't won a graded event since a taking three during his 5-year-old season in 2013.

Another notable entrant in the five-horse field is 2011 Sovereign Award winner Pender Harbour, who was named champion 3-year-old colt in Canada that year, but is still seeking his first graded stakes score.

Stakes winner Puntrooskie and graded stakes-placed Black Hornet complete the field.
