If the odds were to believed, the Angels Flight Stakes, a 6 1/2-furlong test on the turf at Santa Anita Park for 3-year-old fillies would set the scene for a dramatic clash between 4-5 favorite Manhattan Jungle and second favorite Teena Ella (3-1).
While those fine competitors provided drama, it was the longshot in the field of five, Fast and Shiny , who won the day.
Breaking from the outside at 7-1 under jockey Abel Cedillo, Fast and Shiny held her own against the highly touted challengers until crossing the dirt and putting enough distance between them to wrap up the race in start-to-wire fashion in 1:13.19. Teena Ella closed late, but ran out of real estate and finished half a length back.
Fast and Shiny posted fractions of :22.38, :44.56, and 1:07.02.
As for the two favorites, there was a steward's inquiry to determine if Teena Ella, with Kazushi Kimura in the irons, had caused Manhattan Jungle and Juan Hernandez to lose a better placing when crossing the dirt portion of the track. As the field came down the hill, Kimura and Teena Ella ducked out, crossing the dirt. This movement seemed to have caused Hernandez to widen his angle. Ultimately the stewards ruled there was no impact.
Fast and Shiny paid $17.20 on a $2 bet. She was followed by Teena Ella, Manhattan Jungle, Broadway Girls , and Ragtime Rose .
Trained by Bob Baffert, Fast and Shiny improves to 3-0-1 from seven lifetime starts with $193,700 in earnings. Owned by Michael Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, Fast and Shiny is by Bernardini and out of the Lion Hearted mare Spotted Heart .
Fast and Shiny was purchased by Three Amigos Racing Stable (Pegram, Watson, and Weitman) at the 2021 Keeneland September Sale for $150,000 out of the Hidden Brook consignment.
