A potential shakeup of the bubble for a spot in the $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1) could come April 12 when the connections of Winchell Thoroughbreds' Disarm decide whether or not to enter the 3-year-old homebred son of Gun Runner in the April 15 Lexington Stakes (G3) at Keeneland.
"It's possible," David Fiske, racing manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds said April 10. "He worked this morning. It will probably be a game time, or entry box, decision on Wednesday."
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Disarm is currently 26th in the race for one of 20 spots in the Run for the Roses after gaining 40 points for a second in the March 25 Louisiana Derby (G2). But with the Lexington offering 20-8-6-4-2 points to the top five finishers, finishing at least third would vault him ahead of Jace's Road , who currently holds down the last non-secured spot on the Leaderboard with 45 points.
While West Point Thoroughbreds and Albaugh Family Stables' Jace's Road is 19th on the Leaderboard, the 20th spot is guaranteed to Continuar who gained a place in the starting gate through the Japanese Road to the Kentucky Derby series.
Disarm, who has a record of 1-2-1 in four career starts, worked four furlongs in :50 1/5 Monday at Churchill Downs. It was the 26th fastest of 30 works at the distance.
In other Kentucky Derby-related news Monday, Jason Loutsch, an owner and racing manager for Albaugh Family Stable, said Flavien Prat has been booked to ride Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Angel of Empire in the May 6 opening leg of the Triple Crown.
