Mendelssohn Filly Fastest at OBS Spring Preview Day 1

The first of seven days of under tack previews got underway at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training April 16, with a Mendelssohn   filly breezing the fastest eighth-mile of the day in :09 3/5. The day saw pleasant temperatures with a headwind that picked up in the afternoon.

Consigned as Hip 141 by Off the Hook, agent, the Florida-bred filly out of Caroline Victoria , by Lonhro , comes from the family of grade 3 winner Mighty Caroline  and Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) winner American Theorem . J Stables and Gelfenstein Farm bred the March-born filly; this will be her first trip through the sales ring.

Three juveniles breezed the second-fastest furlong in :09 4/5:

  • Hip 1, a Bee Jersey   filly out of group 3-placed Aaroness , producer of Peruvian stakes-placed Perfect Sr. , by Perfect Soul. Consigned by Hoppel's Horse and Cattle Co., the filly was purchased by Patrick Hoppel for $45,000 out of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale last year. She was bred in Kentucky by Charles Fipke.
  • Hip 37,  a Flameaway   filly consigned by The S G V Thoroughbreds, agent. She was bred in Kentucky by John C. Oxley, out of his grade 2 stakes-placed mare Appreciating , by Sky Mesa  . The dark bay or brown filly is half sister to Starlet Stakes (G1)-placed Nasreddine , by Nyquist  . Lehigh pinhooked the February-born filly from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $130,000.
  • Hip 71, by freshman sire Vino Rosso  . The Top Line Sales, agent-consigned filly is out of the unraced Uncle Mo   mare Beautissimo . The filly was bred in the sunshine state by Loren Nichols; next week will be the bay's first trip through the sales pavilion. 

A Bolt d'Oro   filly consigned as Hip 3 by RiceHorse Stable turned in the fastest quarter-mile work in :20 3/5. Brandon and Ali Rice picked the speedy filly up for $160,000 from the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale last year. Caliburn Farm bred the March-born filly in New York; she is out of the graded-placed and stakes-winning mare Above Fashion .

Watch Hip 3 breeze in :20 3/5

Two horses clocked the second fastest time at :20 4/5 over a quarter-mile.

  • Hip 27, a Kantharos   colt consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent, out of the Arch mare Always Right . He comes from the family of producer Ticket To Houston and grade 2 winner Runway Model , dam of grade 1-winning sire McKinzie  . He was bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Farms and sold to Sayeli Camacho during the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $40,000.
  • Hip 57, the J V C Training and Sales-consigned filly by Midshipman  . She is the first foal from Avoree Noel , half sister to stakes winner Country Diva . JVC Training and Sales sourced the filly from the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Sale last year for $20,000. She was bred in Kentucky by Mike Heitzmann.

The under tack show continues Monday at 8 a.m. ET, with Hips 176-350 scheduled to take to the track. The show will be live-streamed via the OBS website at obssales.com and via BloodHorse. The breeze show concludes April 22.

Under tack results and videos are posted on the OBS website at obssales.com and can be viewed on kiosks in the breezeway and the Video Room adjacent to the Horsemen's Lounge. In-room viewing is available at The Courtyard by Marriott, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn, and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton.

The first of four days of selling begins April 25 at 10:30 a.m., with Hips 1-306 scheduled to go under the hammer, followed by Hips 307-612 April 26, Hips 613-918 April 27, and Hips 919-1222 April 28.
