Trainer Tom Amoss was suspended 60 days and fined $5,000 April 14 by the Indiana Racing Commission as a settlement after one of his horses tested positive for a banned substance.
Malibu S S tested positive for sotalol after winning an allowance race at Horseshoe Indianapolis Oct. 17, 2022. The positive result was confirmed via split sample. Malibu S S has been disqualified and Rich Kingdom , who finished second by a length, has been declared the winner.
Sotalol is a beta blocker that, according to the Mayo Clinic, "works by affecting the response to nerve impulses in certain parts of the body, like the heart. As a result, the heart beats slower and at a regular rhythm." Sotalol can be used to treat arrhythmias in horses.
The Association of Racing Commissioners International categorizes sotalol as a Class 3/Penalty Level B substance.
Prior to a hearing before the board of stewards April 12, Amoss and the IHRC reached their settlement. The first 15 days of the suspension is being served from April 15-29, with the remaining 45 days deferred. They will be served should Amoss, who now has two Class 3/Penalty Level B offenses in the last 365 days, be found responsible for a medication violation in any jurisdiction before Nov. 17.
Since his first start of 2023 Jan. 26 for Amoss, Malibu S S has been claimed twice. He is currently owned by End Zone Athletics and conditioned by Karl Broberg.
