Reincarnate breezes April 22 at Santa Anita Park

Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Mage  breezed six furlongs in 1:14.78 April 22 at Gulfstream Park, while Arkansas Derby (G1) third Reincarnate  went five furlongs in 1:01 at Santa Anita Park—both in preparation for a scheduled start in the May 6 Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Mage, a lightly raced son of Good Magic   trained by Gustavo Delgado and owned by OGMA Investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing and CMNWLTH, galloped out a mile.

"He worked good. We liked what we saw. Everything is going to plan, thank God," said assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr.

A jockey has yet to be named to ride Mage in the Derby.

The colt, a $290,000 purchase at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds-in-Training Sale from the Sequel Bloodstock consignment, is scheduled to ship April 23 to Churchill Downs to finish his preparation for a run in the Kentucky Derby.

"We just want him to get to know the track. We don't expect to do very much there, fitness-wise," Delgado Jr. said. "He should be ready after this work. Every day is crucial. We'll take it day by day, but we like the position we're in right now."

Making only his third start in the Florida Derby, Mage made a sweeping move from 12th after breaking slowly to take the lead at the top of the stretch to get the jump on heavily favored Forte , but the latter kicked into overdrive in the stretch to pull out the victory by a length.

Mage, who collected 40 points for his runner-up Florida Derby finish and 10 points for his game effort in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), sits 16th on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard, assuring the Kentucky-bred colt a stall in the starting gate for the first leg of the 2023 Triple Crown.

Reincarnate, another son of Good Magic, pulled clear in his breeze from his workmate Westward Look under the oversight of trainer Tim Yakteen. It was his second work since the Arkansas Derby.

"He worked great. Looked really good this morning," Yakteen said.

Earlier this year for then-trainer Bob Baffert, Reincarnate won the Sham Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita for owners SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, Jay Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital, and Catherine Donovan. A troubled third in the Feb. 25 Rebel Stakes (G2) between the Jan. 8 Sham and the April 1 Arkansas Derby, he has a 2-3-2 record in seven starts with earnings of $345,650, with his two most recent races coming for Yakteen.

Yakteen also reported Saturday that his other Kentucky Derby prospect, Practical Move , emerged from an April 21 workout at Santa Anita in top condition. The latter races for owners Lesley Amestoy, Pierre Jean Amestoy Jr., and Roger Beasley.

Practical Move, Reincarnate, and other Derby Week starters for Yakteen are scheduled to fly to Kentucky April 29. Practical Move and Reincarnate are slated to have their final pre-Derby works April 28.

Ramon Vazquez rides Practical Move in the Kentucky Derby, while John Velazquez has the mount on Reincarnate.

At Churchill Downs, activity was fairly quiet Saturday after six potential Derby prospects breezed there April 21.

Louisiana Derby (G2) runner-up and Lexington Stakes (G3) third-place finisher Disarm  and Holy Bull (G3) winner Rocket Can  galloped and Arkansas Derby winner Angel of Empire  and Wood Memorial (G2) runner-up Hit Show  jogged.

Frank Fletcher Racing Operations' Rocket Can, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, is scheduled to breeze Sunday.
