Penn Barn Quarantined; One Horse Being Tested

Description:

A barn at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course has been placed under quarantine because of suspected equine herpesvirus in one horse.

Chris McErlean, vice president of racing for track owner Penn National Gaming Inc., said tests were being performed Jan. 17 on samples from the affected horse. Results were expected in about 24 hours, he said.

McErlean said the barn contains about 45 horses with multiple trainers. Two horses stabled in the barn and entered for the Jan. 17 program probably will be scratched, he said.

The horse suspected of having EHV-1 has been on the grounds for some time, so it is believed the case isn't connected to recent ones at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland and Parx Racing in Pennsylvania.

McErlean said the test results will determine whether further action is necessary. Horses are permitted to ship in and out of Penn National, but a positive confirmation would lead to other restrictions, he said.
