Jockey Mauro Cedillo is on a ventilator at Cleveland's Metro Health Medical Center after a fall May 1 during the first race at Thistledown during which his mount, Spectacular Road , stumbled while entering the first turn.

Cedillo's agent, Luis Quinones, told BloodHorse May 2 that the rider is heavily sedated and scheduled to have a battery of tests done Tuesday morning. He did say the rider's uncle and trainer Jacinto Lopez, did say Cedillo moved his feet, which was a good sign.

A native of Guatemala, Cedillo began riding in the United States at the end of 2021. Last year, he won 70 races from 509 mounts and banked $1,349,329. Cedillo, 24, is a cousin of Santa Anita Park jockey Abel Cedillo.

Quinones has been Cedillo's agent since the fall meet at Mahoning Valley Racecourse, where the young rider captured the leading jockey title with 33 wins. Prior to being his agent, Quinones said he had been helping out Cedillo by giving him pointers while he was galloping.

Cedillo's ride on Spectacular Road was his third aboard the 10-year-old gelding trained by Gary Johnson and owned by Infront Racing. They were leading the field along the rail on Thistledown's muddy sealed track when the horse stumbled, unseating Cedillo, but recovered to keep running. Quinones said the ambulance got to Cedillo quickly and that the track canceled the remainder of Monday's card.
