Brown Sends Out Foursome in Belmont's Beaugay

Trainer Chad Brown figures to win the $175,000 Beaugay Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park.

The numbers are certainly on his side.

Yet even with half of the fillies and mares hailing from his barn, Brown's foursome in the May 7 stakes is not a cinch to dominate a race that seems wide-open on paper.

Brown's contingent features Klaravich Stables' duo of Consumer Spending , a 4-year-old daughter of More Than Ready who won the Wonder Again Stakes (G2T) at Belmont and was a grade 1 placed last year, and Marketsegmentation  (American Pharoah  ), who took Gulfstream Park's Sand Springs Stakes in her last start.

He will also send out Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables' First Row Partners, and Michael Caruso's  grade 1-placed Kalifornia Queen , a daughter of Lope de Vega , and Peter Brant's recent allowance winner Veronica Greene  (Tapit  ).

But bettors could find some interesting options in the field of eight beyond Brown's starters.

Phipps Stable's Surprisingly  was third for trainer Shug McGaughey last time out in the Hillsborough Stakes (G2T) at Tampa Bay Downs and before that the daughter of Mastery   triumphed in the Endeavour Stakes (G3T), finishing a length ahead of Marketsegmentation, who was third.

The Estate of Robert Amendola's speedy Evvie Jets  looks like the one to catch in a field without much speed. The 5-year-old Twirling Candy   mare was a grade 3 winner for trainer Mertkan Kantarmaci last year and prevailed in the Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in her 2023 debut.

Bobby Flay's Contemporary Art , a Dubawi  filly, captured her 4-year-old debut, a March 26 allowance optional claimer at Gulfstream Park, for trainer Christophe Clement.
