Godolphin's Matareya took command at the top of the lane and fended off bids from Wicked Halo and an unlucky Goodnight Olive to win the $750,000 Derby City Distaff (G1) on Kentucky Derby Day May 6 at Churchill Downs.
Flavien Prat rode the 4-year-old daughter of Pioneerof the Nile for trainer Brad Cox, racing seven furlongs on a fast track in 1:21.87. She paid $12.12 for a $2 win wager.
Wicked Halo produced an even stalking bid to grab second, edging champion Goodnight Olive, who was bottled up in traffic on the inside for much of the race under Irad Ortiz Jr.
Hot and Sultry was fourth.
