The single-sale session includes 253 horses on offer

New Zealand Bloodstock will hold a live auction for broodmares for the first time since 2019, with 70 Lots added to the catalog for next month's National Sale at Karaka, a sign that breeders' reinvestment is starting to pay off.

The addition of breeding stock, to complement the 183 weanlings to go under the hammer June 16, comes at a time when the New Zealand racing and bloodstock industry enjoys a renaissance with Kiwi-breds winning seven of the eight group 1s run at The Championships in Sydney in April, while a resurgence of the country's stallion ranks is in full swing.

Sixty-one of the 70 mares being offered at Karaka are in foal to stallions, including champion sire-in-waiting Proisir, Satono Aladdin , Super Seth, Sword of State, Tarzino, and Ardrossan. Dual group 1 winner Xanadu, will also be offered in foal to Per Incanto  carrying a sibling to three-time Hong Kong winner Sixth Generation

"We have real depth to our stallion ranks at the moment and the Kiwi-bred horses are having an incredible season, particularly in Australia. That's been evident with the domination at The Championships recently and on Saturday we saw Ruthless Dame pick up a group 1 sprint (Robert Sangster Stakes) over in Australia," New Zealand Bloodstock sales manager Kane Jones told ANZ Bloodstock News.

"There's a number of well-related and well-performed mares and a number of them are carrying really commercial pregnancies, so we are quite excited to have the broodmare session reinstated."

The weanling session in the past has produced group 1 winners Pignan, Callsign Mav, and Jennifer Eccles, as well as this season's star juvenile Tokyo Tycoon, and this year's catalog could provide similar opportunities for buyers.

Foals by proven sires Proisir, Per Incanto, Ocean Park, and Darci Brahma  are on offer, as are the progeny of first season sires Banquo, Circus Maximus , Earthlight , Hello Youmzain , King of Comedy , and Peltzer.

"It is a nice big number and it is a really diverse offering of weanlings from proven sires, by exciting emerging sires and some of our first season sires as well," Jones said.

"I am really looking forward to seeing the first crop of Banquo, Circus Maximus, and King of Comedy offered for the first time.

"The pinhooks will be active, I know that, and over the years we've seen some great pinhook results and some value to be found, so expect the pinhookers to be active but also the trainers and end users alike.

"There's something for everybody, across the board."

All weanlings purchased from the sale are eligible for the lucrative Karaka Million race series, headlined by the NZ$1 million Karaka Million for 2-year-olds and the Karaka Million 3YO Classic conducted each January.

For the second year in succession, New Zealand Bloodstock's National Sale will be held in June, following Inglis' Australian Weanling and Broodmare Sale, which was held last week, and the Australian auction house's Great Southern Sale in early June in Melbourne. The Magic Millions National Sale will commence next week.
