This week the “Cool Hotels” series heads to the Big Apple in anticipation of the Belmont Stakes and the hunt for the Triple Crown. In addition to its world class horse racing, New York has a reputation for its elite hotel culture. Note: Not elitist, just simply elite. All of the ensuing hotels can fit any budget (when New York’s steep costs are factored in), while providing a truly memorable stay.

The Lowdown: This is the product of the vision of Robert De Niro. The cinema star created the hotel in 2008 with the core mission of invoking feelings of space and silence - both taboo topics in New York. De Niro has a penthouse amongst the 87 other rooms, none of which are alike, at the hotel. The underground pool will have you feeling like you are in an exotic underground cave, and not underneath towering skyscrapers. It’s a true triumph of New York’s Tribeca neighborhood.

The Lowdown: Sleek and simple luxury. It’s chic without being pretentious and an extreme value considering its prime location in the middle of Manhattan and across the street from the famed Bryant Park. As an added perk for your stay over the weekend, they offer free valet parking. This will come in handy, since getting to and from Belmont on the train can be a bit of a hassle on Belmont Stakes day.

The Rate: $220
The Lowdown: It’s tough to beat that rate, when it comes to downtown NYC. It’s décor hinges on French Country style, and its clubroom offers a nightly reception with delectable wine and cheese pairings. The hotel dates back to the 1920s and its ode to tradition resonates with Thoroughbred racing fans who always have a keen appreciation for nostalgia.
