Dr. Schivel , the 2021 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) runner-up who has not started since third in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) on March 26, 2022, returns May 13 in a six-furlong, $71,000 allowance at Santa Anita Park.
The 5-year-old son of Violence , who at 3 won the 2021 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar, will face four rivals in his long-awaited comeback including C Z Rocket , the runner-up in the 2022 Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland.
Mark Glatt, who trains Dr. Schivel for owners Red Baron's Barn, Rancho Temescal, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, and William Branch, said his charge returned from the trip to Dubai with bone bruising.
Santa Anita leading rider Juan Hernandez rides Dr. Schivel, the 6-5 morning-line favorite. Ramon Vazquez is on 7-5 C Z Rocket.
Glatt had considered sending Dr. Schivel to Pimlico Race Course for a comeback try in the Maryland Sprint (G3) on the May 20 Preakness Day undercard but the decision was ultimately made to stay home.
"When a horse has been off that long, you want to make it as easy as you can. But they're never easy," Glatt noted. "We're trying to get a race under his belt and see where he's at off this layoff."
C Z Rocket, a last-out eighth in this March's Dubai Golden Shaheen, was recently scratched from the May 6 Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) on the Kentucky Derby (G1) undercard.
