The first of three under tack shows got underway May 16 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, held at the Timonium Fairgrounds in Maryland. A son of Florida sire Awesome Slew clocked the fastest eighth of a mile, going in :10, while two juveniles shared the fastest quarter in :21 3/5.
Hip 91, a colt consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent, sped down the stretch easily, turning in the fastest time Tuesday. The bay is out of the winning Distorted Humor mare Cash Reserve , dam of six winners, including stakes-placed Reckling and Campy Cash . He was bred by John B. Penn in Florida and sold to Champion Equine during the 2022 October Select and Open Sale of Yearlings at Ocala Breeders Sales for $150,000 from consignor Sue Vacek.
Cash Reserve comes from the well-connected family of second dam Private Treasure, the Darley Alcibiades (G2) winner and the runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), both in 1990. The Explodent mare produced grade 3-placed stakes winner Sam Lord's Castle and stakes winner Golden Locket .
Six other juveniles breezed a furlong in :10 1/5. They were: Hip 69, a filly by Maximus Mischief consigned by Bryan Ford Training Stable, agent, from the female family of grade 1-winning sire Bee Jersey ; a New York-bred colt by Lookin At Lucky , Hip 89, consigned by Top Line Sales, agent; Hip 125, a Maximus Mischief colt consigned by Cary Frommer, agent; Hip 160, a filly consigned by Sequel Bloodstock, agent, and sired by Munnings ; a City of Light half sister to Iroquois (G3) winner The Tabulator , Hip 174, consigned by SGV Thoroughbreds, agent; and Hip 186, an Uncle Mo filly consigned by Pick View, agent, from the immediate family of champion 2-year-old colt Nyquist .
A colt consigned as Hip 15 by LG Agent from the first crop of Flameaway sped a quarter in :21 3/5. The Kentucky-bred will make his third appearance in the sales ring next week after selling most recently to Gina Fennell for $70,000 during the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearlings Sale. The bay colt is the second foal out of the unraced mare Allez Jete, half sibling to stakes-placed For Rosalind and dam of South African grade 3 winner Fair Rosalind .
A son of Nyquist shared the co-fastest quarter, consigned as Hip 126 by Top Line Sales agent. Bred in Ontario by Track West Racing, the bay colt sold during the Keeneland September Yearling Sale last year from the Susan Y. Foreman draft for $110,000 to Elusive Thoroughbreds. A half sibling to Smiley Sobotka , a winner at 2 and placed in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2), both colts are out of Dance Thewayyouare . The Mineshaft mare is a half sibling to grade 1 winner Love Theway Youare , dam of Dowager Stakes (G3) victress Summer in Saratoga .
Two juveniles logged a quarter mile in :21 4/5 to share Tuesday's second-fastest time at the distance. Boutte Sales, agent, consigned Hip 113, a Blame colt, and Coastal Equine, agent, consigned the Anchor Down filly Hip 199.
The under tack show continues Wednesday at 8 a.m. with Hips 201-400 set to hit the dirt, followed by Hips 401-603 Thursday. The sale gets underway May 22 at 11 a.m. and concludes May 23.
