Unbeaten Karpino Romps in German Guineas

Description:

Pearl Bloodstock's unbeaten Karpino overwhelmed nine overmatched rivals May 25 at Cologne in capturing the Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (Ger-II, German Two Thousand Guineas) and stamped his ticket to the German Derby (Ger-I).

With Oisin Murphy riding for trainer Andreas Wohler, the Cape Cross colt tracked pacesetter Rock Academy from second in the early running, easily dispatched that opponent with a quarter-mile to run, and then shook free to a 4 1/2-length triumph. Fanciful Angel was second and Molly Le Clou was third, a head back.

Karpino's victory, his third from as many starts, was achieved in 1:34.01 for the 1,600 meters (about one mile) on good turf.

"It's most likely the German Derby will now be next on his program, but he is entered in every big race," Wohler told Racing Post. "He definitely stays and all the big mile-and-a-half races will be options."

The German Derby is set for July 5 at Hamburg and is run at 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles).

Karpino won his debut by four lengths at Hoppegarten in September in his only start last year. In his 2015 debut April 26 at Krefeld, he landed the Dr Busch Memorial (Ger-III) by 2 1/2 lengths going 1,700 meters (about 1 1/16 miles).

A private acquisition earlier this year by Sheikh Fahad's Pearl Bloodstock, Kaprino was bred in Germany by Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof. His dam is the stakes-placed Sadler's Wells mare Kahara, a full sister to 2001 Rothmans Royals St. Leger (Eng-I) winner and sire Milan, runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT).

The extended family includes English/Irish Derby winner and sire Kahyasi.
