Siblings running on the same racing card is rare. On June 10 full brothers not only will run on the same Belmont Stakes Day card, they'll both compete in graded stakes at the identical marathon distance.
Six races before Winchell Thoroughbreds' Red Route One runs in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (G1) at 1 1/2 miles Saturday, his full brother, Red Run , will break from the gate in the $250,000 Brooklyn Stakes (G2) at the same 12-furlong trip at Belmont Park.
"That shows a mile-and-a-half is in the pedigree," said David Fiske, racing manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Both the 3-year-old and 4-year-old sons of Gun Runner were bred by Winchell Thoroughbreds and are out of the Tapit mare Red House. While Red Route One will be tackling 12 furlongs for the first time in Saturday's Test of the Champion, his older brother is already accomplished at the distance.
After he was claimed from owner Ron Winchell and trainer Steve Asmussen by owner Jordan Wycoff and trainer Mike Maker for $50,000 March 12, Red Run two starts later finished second by a neck to fellow Brooklyn starter Warrant in the 1 1/2-mile Isaac Murphy Marathon Overnight Stakes May 3 at Churchill Downs.
He is listed at 6-1 odds as the co-fourth choice in the Brooklyn.
Red Route One has a longer 15-1 price that just might take on a different shine based on what happens in the Brooklyn with his full brother.
"I'm not worried about the distance with him," assistant trainer Scott Blasi said about Red Route One.
