A victory in the Belmont Stakes (G1) propelled Arcangelo into second place in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's final Top 3-Year-Old Poll of 2023, which was announced June 13. He trails only Forte , last year's champion 2-year-old male, who lost for the first time in three starts this year when second in the Belmont June 10.
Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mage is third, followed by Preakness Stakes (G1) winner National Treasure in fourth. Mage skipped the Belmont after a third-place finish in the Preakness, while National Treasure faded to sixth in the 1 1/2-mile third leg of the Triple Crown.
Rounding out the top five is Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's , who is expected to race next in the June 24 Ohio Derby (G3) at Thistledown.
Horses who excelled on the Belmont Stakes undercard captured the top spots in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll. There, Metropolitan Handicap (G1) winner Cody's Wish leads stablemate and True North Stakes (G2) winner Elite Power , with Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) winner Clairiere in third and Just a Game Stakes (G1T) winner In Italian in fourth.
Both NTRA polls cover racing through June 11, with voting conducted by national media. The 3-Year-Old Poll concludes shortly after the Triple Crown.
The Top Thoroughbred poll represents horses competing for Horse of the Year. That poll wraps up Nov. 7, days after the completion of the Breeders' Cup Championships.
