Five Jockeys Involved in Gulfstream Spills

Description:

Gulfstream Park officials said several jockeys escaped serious injury in spills in back-to-back races Jan. 20.

In the ninth race, a starter/optional claiming test at six furlongs, Raised for Speed ducked in and fell suddenly while clear of the field in the final sixteenth of a mile and threw rider Abdiel Jaen. Vero's Hero was unable to avoid Raised for Speed and lost rider Edgard Zayas.

Jaen and Zayas walked back to the jockeys' room. Vero's Hero did not appear to sustain any injuries, while Raised for Speed was vanned back to the barn area for further evaluation.

In the 10th race, an allowance/optional claiming event at five furlongs on the turf, Suzzona, ridden by Matthew Rispoli, clipped heels and fell on the far turn. Cameo Lady, ridden by Luis Saez, and Unseen Visitor, under Joel Rosario, both fell over Suzzona.

Saez and Rosario escaped serious injury, Gulfstream officials said, while Rispoli was transported to nearby Memorial Regional Hospital. Suzzona and Unseen Visitor were on their feet after the accident; Cameo Lady was vanned to the barn area, officials said.
